Disturbed – Stricken

I know, I know, it’s been too damn long, but there’s been a lot going on, so that’s my “excuse”. For my “comeback” (God, I’ve had a lot of those), I’m featuring a new band for this blog: Disturbed. They’re a heavy metal band from Chicago, and they have 5 studio albums and one compilation album in their repertoire. The song I’m writing about today is called Stricken off the album The Thousand Fists (2005). Hope you all enjoy the song, the lyrics (here) and the twisted music video!

This song is pretty heavy sound wise and in the lyrics. The voice of the vocalist, David Draiman, is rough and cool, and it sounds awesome. I love the chugging guitars and the beat of the song, which gives the lyrics more attitude when sung out. The lyrics are great and they say a lot about the tormented soul of this person, feelings that many can relate to. Especially “into the abyss will I run” is very dark and deep. Of course I love the guitar solo, it’s fantastic. The band actually stated that  they felt that guitar solos are a part of music that is absent in a lot of modern music, and they wanted to bring some of that back, and they did very well in doing so. The music video seems dark and twisted, and (according to Wikipedia) some of it was filmed in an abandoned hospital in which some scenes from the 1984 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street were filmed, which is pretty cool. I usually don’t write about songs the same day I hear it for the first time, but with this song I’ll gladly make an exception.

“You’ll never know how your face has haunted me
My very soul has to bleed this time
Another hole in the wall of my inner defenses
Leaving me breathless”
(Stricken – Disturbed)

Avantasia – Twisted Mind

Hello there! Now, this is my 99th post, and I’m writing this in honor of my biggest fan, Markus. One of his favorite bands is Avantasia, a German power metal “project” (according to Wikipedia, their words, not mine), and since it is, I figured the best way to honor him on my blog is to write about them. I’ve chosen, with a little help from him, the song Twisted Mind, off the album The Scarecrow (2008).

I really love the dark sound and lyrics of this song. The guitar riffs are simply awesome, and really fit the lyrics, just as heavy, dark and twisted as the rest of it. I quite like the vocalists, Tobias Sammet’s voice. It’s pretty big and powerful. I also think the small touches of piano that can be heard in the background between the chugging of the guitars are nice. In addition, they managed to sneak in a very short guitar solo, which is needless to say, I also liked.
Bottom line, genius song.

“I never tried to hide away, or tried to keep your pace
You walked me to the slaughter with a smile upon your face”
(Avantasia – Twisted Mind)

New artists?

I have thought long about if this blog has enough variety in songs. That is why I created this poll below, in which I ask for suggestions for artists to write a post about. Well, it wouldn’t be about the artist, but a song by the artist. (If you want info on the artist, use Wikipedia, for God’s sake!) You may submit your own answers to this poll, if you’d like. I have just come up with some examples, that I actually may consider writing about if you want me to.
The only rule is, that there is some artists I won’t write about, no matter how badly you want me to. You should know what I’m talking about, and I don’t even want to mention them. This is a blog about the music that I like and love, not what fourteen years-old girls like…
You may also select several of the alternatives, just to have it said.
You can comment on the post if there are some special songs you want me to write about (and make it easier for me, haha)

“I hold my breath as this life starts to take its toll
I hide behind a smile as this perfect plan unfolds
But oh, God, I feel I’ve been lied to
Lost all faith in the things I have achieved”
(Away From Me – Evanescence)

Lil Wayne – How To Love

Well, wow, I thought I would manage to write more often when I just got some suggestions for what to write about. I was totally wrong. I need time. I don’t have enough time for anything. Not even the things I need to do. Procrastination is the worst thing ever. I really need to pull myself together.
Now, enough with the bad excuses. Let’s hear some music!
The last song of the challenge is “How To Love” by Lil Wayne.  The song was published on the album “Tha Carter IV” in 2011
Here’s the lyrics, and  music video:

Sad song, and even sadder music video. The lyrics are good, and it’s telling a story, not just random stuff (I checked it out, Wikipedia FTW!)
The music itself is pretty much just drums and an acoustic guitar. The song is not what we usually would expect from Lil Wayne, but it’s really not negative. One of his more meaningful songs, I would say. Quite good.
Well, hard to say much about this song too, as it’s not my favorite music, but it’s not bad, not bad at all.

I also got a link for the song without the music video here, as it sort of disturbs the continuity of the song.

“You had a lot of crooks tryna steal your heart
Never really had luck, couldn’t never figure out
How to love”
(How To Love – Lil Wayne)
