I’m usually not particularly a big fan of Lady Gaga, I’m no “Monster”, that’s for sure (what die-hard Lady Gaga fans calls themselves – derived from her album titled The Fame Monster from 2009); as you probably can guess, I’m more of a “EvHead” or “Head Case” (what Evanescence and Machine Head fans, respectively, call themselves) but that’s another subject and discussion entirely. This song stuck me like lightning in broad daylight. I liked it instantly, and knowing the background of the song, I like it even more. This song was written for the documentary film “The Hunting Ground” (2015), and is based on personal life experiences in Lady Gaga’s life. She was raped. She dedicated this song to rape-survivors, and to promote anti-rape on college campuses in America, because one in five women become victims of sexual assault.

She did a wonderful performance of the song at the 88th Oscars Award this year (2016), where she brought a group of sexual assault survivors up on stage, both men and women, who stood together with her for the latter half of the song. It was beautiful and moving. See for yourselves.

To have it said: Yes, I cried. This is an important subject, and I urge you, not as a woman, not only for women, but as a person, for every human on the planet, help prevent rape. Because until it happens to you, you won’t know how it feels.

“Tell me how the hell could you know? How could you know?
Til it happens to you, you don’t know how it feels”

(Til It Happens To You – Lady Gaga)

Hi! Today’s song is So Far Away by Avenged Sevenfold. It was published on the album Nightmare in 2010. The song is dedicated to the late Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, former drummer of Avenged Sevenfold. Here are the lyrics.

The song is in its essence about the loss of their band mate, Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, who passed away in 2009, the year before the album was published, which influenced the whole album significantly. That is also why they included the military drums, at the end of the song, before the solo, which is a salute to the dead. The music video is about their story as friends, and being in a band with The Rev and the memory of him.
The lyrics are about The Rev, knowing him, and how it was to lose him. “Lived a life so endlessly, saw beyond what others see” “Sleep tight, I’m not afraid” “How do I live without the ones I love?” “And the light you left remains, but it’s so hard to stay, when I have so much to say and you’re so far away”. The guitars are brilliant as usual, expressing the sore feelings beautifully, and even though it’s not as heavy as their other songs, it’s still just as great as the rest, with much, maybe more meaning to it than the rest. This song could mean much to people who have lost or miss someone they love just as well as it means much to A7X fans.

“Place and time always on my mind
I have so much to say but you’re so far away”
(So Far Away – Avenged Sevenfold)

Hi! Yes, I think it’s about time I wrote something about Three Days Grace. This time it’s The Good Life, off the album Life Starts Now (2009). The lyrics are here, and the music video below:

The guitar riffs in the intro are just fucking amazing. The song is heavy, and it’ts pushing forward with much energy. The music itself is heavy, but the lyrics are not as dark as the music would suggest. They deal with the need for a bit of the Good Life, getting the change that is very much needed. Adam’s voice is rough and good as always, and it brings out the lyrics in a good way. The song isn’t so long, but it’s a really good one still.

“All I want is a little of the good life
All I need is to have a good time”
(The Good Life – Three Days Grace)

Green Day – 21 Guns

Today’s song is called 21 Guns by the American punk rock band Green Day. The song was published on the album 21st Century Breakdown in 2009. Here are the lyrics, and below is the song:

I think the lyrics are deep, but I can’t really figure out what I think they mean, but they’re pretty cool all the same.  I especially like the build-up to the guitar solo “Did you try to live on your own?”, and of course the solo was good too. I actually really liked the music video to this one. It reflects the song nicely.

“When it’s time to live and let die, and you can’t get another try
Something inside you heart has died, you’re in ruins”
(21 Guns – Green Day)

Hello there! Today’s song is Dying Breed by the American heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch. The song was published in 2009 in the album War Is The Answer. Here are the lyrics, enjoy!

(Really strict copyright policies for 5FDP on their songs on YouTube, and to replace the video I posted in the past, this was the best I could do, but it doesn’t ruin the song, I think it’s good enough).

Edit: I found the recorded version of the song, concealed as a song called “Not Like You” by Slipknot, even though Slipknot has no such song, and it definitely isn’t Slipknot playing. Anyways, for those who don’t have Spotify and can find it there, this is the best thing.

The drums is the strongest instrument in this one, and I like it. It makes the song heavy, aggressive and hard core, along with the growling. I can also clearly hear the bass in there too, which is great. The lyrics are pretty awesome, and the guitar solo rocks, as well do the few riffs included. “Just a dead man walking with a double barreled shotgun”. How genius is that?!? I even got the refrain stuck in my head now. Really like it!

“All I wanted was your honesty
Something more than this, something more than me
Death can take me if I can’t be free
I’m not like you, I’m a dying breed”
(Dying Breed – Five Finger Death Punch)

Paramore – Playing God

Hey! Now it’s time for a review of the song Playing God by Paramore. It was published in 2009 on the album Brand New Eyes. Here are the lyrics, and the music video:

The lyrics have an attitude, but because of the music, it doesn’t come across as strong as with heavier guitar riffs and more aggressive drums. The song is sort of quiet, but the music video say so much, that it seems right that it is. The music video certainly match the song. Hayley is disguised as a sweet housewife, but really has poisoned and kidnapped the rest of the band, like the lyrics are disguised by the not-so-hard tone of the song. I don’t know if any of that really makes any sense, but I like the song, and that makes sense to me at least.

“Next time you point a finger I might have to bend it back or break it, break it off
Next time you point a finger, I’ll point you to the mirror”
(Playing God – Paramore)

Hello! Today I’m doing a post on the song Someone Who Cares by Three Days Grace. Published on the album Life Starts Now in 2009. Here are the lyrics.

The lyrics and their meaning are very strong in this one. And they are very true too. I think the guitar riffs are good, and I really like Adam’s voice. After the bridge the song seems to escalate, and I think that was a good thing. It gave the song more energy towards the end.

“It’s so hard to find someone who cares about you
But it’s easy enough to find someone who looks down on you”
(Someone Who Cares – Three Days Grace)

Hey there! Since this is my 100th post, I decided to do something special, not just for this blog, but also for one of my best friends. I am doing a post on the song A Nightmare To Remember by Dream Theater. The song was published on the album Black Clouds And Silver Linings in 2009. Here are the lyrics.

This song has it all, and it should, considering it lasts for almost 17 minutes! Surprisingly, this song is not even close to the longest song Dream Theater has produced.
It contains sound effects of thunder,  a car crashing, and sirens, and other things, like the song was written about, a car crash that John Petrucci was in when he was a kid. The song even got a short guitar solo between the first and the second verse!
It has slow parts,  the song changes tempo several times in the song, like in the middle of the second guitar solo. There’s even growling too.
This song rocks hard, and it’s just amazing and awesome. I love the whole song, from drums and guitar to lyrics to sound effects. I repeat: This song has it all.

“Now I’m not one to soon forget
And I bet I never will”
(A Nightmare To Remember – Dream Theater)

Epica – Unleashed

Today’s song is Unleashed by Epica. It was released on the album Design Your Universe in 2009. Here are the lyrics, and below is the music video:

I will say that this song is really epic. It’s grand, with an amazing choir and Simone’s wonderfully executed vocals. I also think the music video is pretty damn cool. And they all look posessed without looking awful. The whole concept of symphonic metal is surprisingly big in my ears. Every little sound feels like it’s filling my ears, even the rather quiet ones.  I am really impressed when simone takes the whole song up a notch in the end. What a voice!

“Time is just a concept, and always the first thing to fade”
(Unleashed – Epica)

Hey there! Apologies for not blogging in a terribly long time! Now, today’s post will be about Brick By Boring Brick by Paramore. The song was published in 2009 on the album Brand New Eyes, and was the second single off the album. Here are the lyrics to the song.

This is a song with a little attitude, and it tells a story. It has so much power, even if it doesn’t seem so complicated, Hayley’s voice gives off a lot of power, along with the drums and guitars. Even the meaningless humming gives off power and attitude.

The music video seems very sweet at first, but turns out to be pretty dark, especially the end, despite the bright colors. (Also, weird seeing Hayley with blond hair!)
“Go get your shovel, and we’ll dig a deep hole to bury the castle”. A creative way to tell someone tho forget the thoughts about a perfect life, living like a princess. At least that’s what I get out of the song lyrics.

“If it’s not real, you can’t hold it in your hand, you can’t feel it with your heart, and I won’t believe it.
Well if it’s true you can see it with your eyes, even in the dark, and that’s where I want to be.”

(Brick By Boring Brick – Paramore)
