Hi! So, I have a load of stuff to show you, and to start things off, I want to introduce to you one of the first new songs I heard last year. This one is called Show Me How To Live, an alternative metal song by the band (or “supergroup”) Audioslave, a collaboration of artists Chris Cornell from Soundgarden and Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine. The song was published in 2002 on their self-titled album (Audioslave). Lyrics you can read here. Enjoy.

This song is awesome. The lyrics are cool, and they are preformed with such energy, that you get excited by listening to it, at least I know I do. I love the guitar riffs, and I definitely love the bass in this. Completed with the drums, the song has attitude, with its changes between the sound of the verses and the sound of the choruses, especially effected by Chris Cornell’s voice. The thing Chris Cornell does with his voice at the end of the song is pretty impressive, too, that’s all I’m saying.

The music video is pretty cool too, inspired by the film Vanishing Point (1971), and has scenes from the actual film in it, along with scenes of the band driving a replica of the car that was used in the film, and the band playing.

And it is catchy as hell. Didn’t take me long to get this song stuck on my mind, and there it stayed for days. Prepare yourselves. “Mmmmh…”

“This ringing in my head, is this a cure, or is this a disease?”

“You gave me life, now show me how to live”

(Show Me How To Live – Audioslave)

Johnny Cash – Hurt

Well, time for another song! This time it’s Hurt by Johnny Cash (originally by Nine Inch Nails). The song was published in 2002 on the album American IV: The Man Comes Around, as one of the last songs recorded by Cash. Here are the lyrics. Listen and enjoy.

A classic. Listened to this once after not having heard it in over a year or so, and it made me tear up. It’s so beautiful. Johnny’s voice is impeccable, a little rough, but so good. Just might be one of the best pieces of music in the world. Liked by so many. It begins so calmly and builds up, and ends with just Johnny’s voice again, and that is so great. The music video is very strong, and the lyrics are too.

“What have I become, my sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away in the end
And you could have it all, my empire of dirt
I will let you down, I will make you hurt”
(Hurt – Johnny Cash)

KoЯn – Thoughtless

Hi. Today’s song is Thoughtless by the American nu-metal band KoЯn. The song was published in 2002 on the album Untouchables. Here are the lyrics, and below is the music video (with “bad” words discretely cut) and the full song:

This is an angry and aggressive song. The lyrics clearly state that “all of my hate cannot be bound”, so there you have it. The use of swearing in the lyrics also helps the song seem even more aggressive, “What the fuck you think it’s doing to me?”.  The music video is somewhat creepy and nasty if you ask me, but suits well for the lyrics. I actually like the whole idea that the “anger” is right beneath the skin, ready to burst out any time. I think the guitar riffs are great, and the song just rocks straight all the way through.

“All of my hate cannot be bound, I will not be drowned by your thoughtless scheming
So you can try to tear me down, beat me to the ground, I will see you screaming”
(Thoughtless – KoЯn)

Evanescence – Farther Away

Hey! Today I’m doing a post on the song Farther Away by Evanescence. The song was published on the Mystary EP (2002) as a B-side on the Bring Me To Life Single (2003), and later was published on Anywhere But Home (2004) in a live version. Here are the lyrics, and here’s the song:

I love the introduction riffs on this song. Jesus Christ, they are awesome! The lyrics are slightly dark, and just the way I like them. “I sold my soul just to hide the light”. Dark indeed. I have said it before, and I say it again, Amy Lee has an incredible voice! “Don’t leave me here, by myself, I can’t breathe”. Just saying.
The guitar riffs are, as I said, awesome, and I quite like the drum beat in the end. I don’t think that is regular drums, but rather some kind of tribal drums. I also love that in the end you can hear the piano playing a very sweet melody. The contrast between the guitars and the piano is pretty cool.

“Tried to forget you, but without you I feel nothing”
(Farther Away – Evanescence)

Eminem – Lose Yourself

Hello there, everyone! Trying to squeeze in some blogging between all the pre-holiday tests that all the teachers puts us through. Thought I’d start on the poll requests from last month. I can’t believe it’s been so long! Shame on me! Well, today’s song is “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, as Eminem was the most voted artist on the poll. This will be interesting. The song was published as a single from the original soundtrack of the movie 8 Mile in 2002. The lyrics are here, and the music video is for you to enjoy below (I know the quality isn’t that good, but I hate it when some words are just cut out of the song, so I found one with both the complete song and video!) :

Eminem is a genius. You really understand why this song won awards.

It’s amazing how he can get so many words stuffed in to one song that lasts for only 5 minutes! I know, that’s called rap, but still…
I love the slow beginning with the piano, and that it sort of builds up with guitars and a strong beat and when the refrain comes you are so in the moment with him. At least I am. The lyrics are very influenced by the movie 8 Mile, and he wrote them in between the takes for it, so you would understand them better if you watched the movie. I haven’t watched it myself yet, but I’m planning to…
The music video has scenes from the movie and was directed by Eminem himself.
It has been categorized as  “Hardcore hip hop” and when you read the lyrics you will understand why!
Eminem is an incredibly great rapper and he is still writes amazing songs. Some rappers just get out-dated, but not Eminem, and when you listen to this you understand why.

“You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You want it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime”
(Lose Yourself – Eminem)
