Hey, and welcome (back)! You all pretty much know my opinion on covers. Not very much a fan. Sometimes, I accept exceptions, if they are very good or they are by one of my favourite bands. This is one of those rare times when the two aspects coexist in a song. This is a cover of The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel, this time with a twist from Disturbed. The original song was published in 1964 on the album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., and the cover by Disturbed was published this year (2015) on the album Immortalized. Enjoy the song with the lyrics here, or in the video link.

Disturbed – The Sound of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel Cover)

You know when you get chills in your face? That’s  what I got from this song. Touched from the first couple of lines, and filled with goosebumps and tears throughout the song. I admire David Draiman’s voice. It really is powerful. The sound of the full band lifts his voice to new heights, and he pulls this off so perfectly, even though you might initially only think of him as a metal vocalist.

It is exciting that Disturbed at all thought of covering this song, and making it their own. The song builds up and up further throughout the song, reminding us more and more of the real Disturbed. The lyrical themes also by all means fit Disturbed well. Hearing Draiman’s voice like this really shows the greatness beyond the metal powers we know well from before. I’m further convinced he could sing pretty much anything.  With a full orchestra to support his vocal performance, the sound is big and beautiful. There is so much room in his voice, I really could just hide in there forever. It really is something else.

“People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs
That voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence
‘Fools’ said I, ‘you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows’ “
(The Sound of Silence – Simon & Garfunkel)
