Vote, for crying out loud!

Hi ya’ll! Just wanted to check in and tell you that you have to vote for Evanescence (and Evanescence ONLY!) in MTV’s Musical March Madness 2012. You simply vote for the artist you like the best (Preferably Evanescence) of the two options you have, and the band/artist who gets the most votes, will advance to the next round and “duel” against another band, until there is only one left. Evanescence is running with their second single, My Heart Is Broken, from their new album, Evanescence

You can vote here.

Vote as if you’re lives depended on it! You can vote as many times as you want to.

To end this I have only one thing to say; Even though I like many of the other bands, like Linkin Park and Paramore, I have yet only one thing to say: EVANESCENCE FOREVER! (Puh! Good to get it out there, starting to get crazy when I read all those silly comments on the comment board)

“I can’t go on living this way, and I can’t go back the way I came”
(My Heart Is Broken – Evanescence)

Sorry for the hold-up. I though it would be okay, since I’ve got tonnes of homework, and so little time.
Today’s song is another by Avenged Sevenfold. It’s called Gunslinger, and this song was published on their self titled album (Avenged Sevenfold) in 2007. Here are the lyrics. This is one song I’ve had on my mind for almost a month now, so it’s good to get this one out to you too.
Listen and Enjoy!

The riffs in the beginning are country-like, and that seems strange for Avenged Sevenfold, and strange that I like it, but I think it’s genius. And the second time around when M. Shadows sings “I’m coming home to you” , before the rough guitars kick in, you really hear it in his voice that it’s about to get rougher. Then I get that stupid smile I was writing about again, because A7X riffs are just awesome. I adore the guitar solo (obviously).  The lyrics are clearly (as I see it!) about someone who has been in the army, and is finally coming home to his love. That’s strong.

(I thought this picture suited well for this post. So sad, it broke my heart a little)
This song has grown to become one of my favorite songs by Avenged Sevenfold.

“I reach towards the sky, I’ve said my goodbyes
My heart’s always with you now
I won’t question why so many have died
My prayers have made it through, yeah”
(Gunslinger – Avenged Sevenfold)

Today I decided to do a review of a song I’ve had on my mind for over a week now. Thought it would be great to get it out to my readers too, since I enjoy this song so much. Today’s song is Unholy Confessions by Avenged Sevenfold. I’ve now made a own category for Avenged Sevenfold, since they have been included in my list of favorite bands now. Unholy Confessions was published on the album Walking The Fallen in 2003. The lyrics are in the link here. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I do.

I absolutely love the riffs. They are amazing, brilliant, fantastic. I get a stupid smile on my face every time I listen to this song. The only thing that pissed me off with this song once, was that if you listen to it with headphones, they switch between left and right sound channel, and I only brought my ruined headset to school, and this song has some riff parts that are only on the left side, including the intro. Guess which sound channel was broken…? Oh yeah. Not fun. But still, with the right kind of headset, that brings out the bass (I recommend Koss, not to advertise!) , this song is really one to worship.

I really don’t mind the screaming. It’s hard core, that’s what this song is supposed to be, so I really enjoy it. The lyrics are just angry and awesome, and maybe I think so because of the screaming, but yeah, I’m gonna go with angry and awesome. I mean, “Nothing hurts my world, just affects the ones around me. When sin’s deep in my blood, you’ll be the one to fall”. Isn’t that angry and awesome to you? Yeah, I thought so.

“I wish I could be the one, the one who won’t care at all”
(Unholy Confessions – Avenged Sevenfold)

Slipknot – Snuff

Today I am presenting a song by the famous American heavy metal band Slipknot. The song I have chosen is called “Snuff”, from their album All Hope Is Gone, released in 2008. For those who didn’t know (and I expect it’s not that many!), they are well known for their special masks that they wear when they preform, and they are known for playing heavy. That is why this song may be a bit surprising, but I love it. Enjoy listening to it, and the lyrics too, which you can find by pressing here.

Snuff is beautiful. It starts out slow, both in the playing, and the lyrics, blaming the “me” in the song, and as the song continues, it gets more agressive, with rougher playing, and rougher lyrics, that shifts the blame over on the “you” of the song. When I say the blame, I mean what I interpret as blame for a break-up. It goes from “My heart is just too dark to care” til the point of “You couldn’t hate enough to love. Is that supposed to be enough?” and “You sold me out to save yourself”. You see that as the song escalades, the hatred in the song, and within the singer, escalades too.
This is not what you would usually expect from Slipknot, as this song isn’t the only song I’ve checked out by these guys, but it’s not disappointing.
Sound-wise the song is special, the guitar riffs are unusual (at least I think so), and the construction is different, but that is one of the things I love about this song. The more I listen to it, the more I love it. And the lyrics explain so much.
“I only wish you weren’t my friend. Then I could hurt you in the end”
(Snuff – Slipknot)

Dream Theater – Wither

The last post of the week, and also the last post of this challenge, is a review of the song Wither by the American progressive metal band Dream Theater. The song was published on the album Black Clouds & Silver Linings in 2009. The lyrics are here, and the official music video is below:

This song is relaxing to me, even though it’s not very discrete and stuff, it has such a slow tempo, and the elements of music that I like, including an awesome guitar solo, which I absolutely love, so this is really a “chill-song” for me. The voice of Kevin James LaBrie, the vocalist, is calming. The lyrics are sore and beautiful, and fit really well with the melody.

The music video, as you can see, is of the band playing in concerts, and backstage, and I think it’s good in a way, because then you manage to just use your ears and focus on the playing and the lyrics.

Thanks to my dear friend and roommate for showing me this song.

“I drown in hesitation
My words come crashing down
And all my best creations
Burn into the ground
The thought of starting over
Leaves me paralyzed”
(Wither – Dream Theater)

Epica – Never Enough

Hi there! Sorry, I’m a bit behind on my schedule now, but I hope you forgive me. At least I’ve managed to keep the posts within 24 hours of each other. Today I’m writing about the song Never Enough by Epica, a Dutch symphonic metal band. The song was released on the album The Divine Conspiracy in 2007. The epic lyrics are here (though I think they are a bit wrong, but I’ll get back to that), and the official music video is (or at least should be) below:

The voice of the Simone Simons, the vocalist, is really remarkable. It is downright grand. In the refrain we can hear both Simone’s wonderful voice, and the other vocalist, and founder of the band, Mark Jansen’s deep growls in the background.  The song is really big and sort of gothic, even though it’s not really what you would think when you read the lyrics. I like the whole sound of the song, the combination of Simone’s voice, the synth piano and violins, and the constantly chugging guitars.

I think there is an error in the lyrics, and I couldn’t find any lyrics page that had the right ones. Instead of “Because you are consumed and incontent”, I think it should be “Because you are consumed and in contempt. What do you think? I think it sounds better, since I’ve never heard of the word “incontent” (and neither did the online dictionaries!), and “in content” sounds weird to me, but “in contempt” would suit well for the context, I think. This kind of ruined my quote. Damn it.  (Let me know what you think!)

The music video is really self explanatory, so I don’t have to say much about it, except from stating the fact that Simone looks smashing, and that I like the fact that the band is flashing on and off again in the video. Cool concept.

“Always hearing what your ears can’t hear
Feeling what your hands can’t touch
Thinking you’re incomplete”
(Never Enough – Epica)

Red – Already Over

Today (or what’s left of it) I’m doing a review of the song Already Over by the American rock band Red. The song was published on the album End Of Silence in 2006. The lyrics are here, and in the video. (A little unsure if the lyrics in the video is the same as in the link, but what the heck) Enjoy.

This was the first song I ever heard by Red, and this song is the one that made me want to check them out further. I like this song a lot because of the slow intro with a nice piano part, and the way it builds up to a rough refrain. The lyrics are good too. A little inconsistent perhaps, but all together a great song.
Unfortunately I’ve got nothing else to say about this song. I just enjoy listening to it, it rocks.

“I Give it all to you
Let go of me
Reaching as I fall
I know it’s already over now”
(Already Over – Red)

Hi there! Today I’m reviewing a song by the band 12 Stones called “Welcome To The End”. It was released in 2010 on the EP “The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday”. The lyrics are both in the video, and here.

I sort of already knew that 12 Stones was a good band, because Paul McCoy, the vocalist, featured with guest vocals in “Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence. Well, at least I knew that they had a good vocalist, the rest I had to check out.
Pretty awesome song. It sort of has an attitude. Especially in the end of the end of the refrain; “We’ve finally reached our bitter end – Welcome to the end”.
The riffs are good too. Playing in general is great. It doesn’t stand out that much, but I like it. It rocks, and that’s enough. It’s really grown on me, sort of gets better and better. And the refrain is catchy. That’s hard to find in a rock song, actually.
I’ve reached the end…

“I’ll be standing in the fire when it all goes up in flames”
(Welcome To The End – 12 Stones)

Halestorm – Innocence

Well, Hello! Today’s song, and first artist for this challenge, is “Innocence” by the American rock band Halestorm. The band was founded by the siblings Lzzy(her actual name is Elizabeth, but her stage name is Lzzy) and Arejay Hale (thereof the name Halestorm).  The song was released on their self titled album (Halestorm) in 2009. The song was actually co-written by Ben Moody, which is the co-founder, and previous member of Evanescence (ironically, I’ve listened to this for a while, and checked out just now about the song, and there his name was… funny how things like that happen to me). You can read the lyrics here. Enjoy the song!

I absolutely adore the guitar riffs. Really fantastic.  Lzzy’s got an amazing voice (her actual name is Elizabeth Hale, but her stage name is Lzzy). You really hear it in the mid of the song, after the bridge, “Child don’t follow me home”, I got chills the first time I listened to that.
They’re different. The lyrics are not all that mushy and all about love. The song is more of the bitchy type, if you know what I mean. She’s still the girl, but the roles are kind of different, turned in a way. Normally you would think that it’s the girl who’s the “child”, but since it’s Lzzy who’s singing, it seems as she wants a boy’s “innocence”. That’s pretty neat to me, it makes me feel powerful as a girl. You can hear it in their other songs too, the kick-ass lyrics, you get confidence as a girl when you listen to them, and that’s great. Different, but definitely brilliant.

“If you choose to stay you’ll throw it all away
And I just want to take your innocence”
(Innocence – Halestorm)

New challenge – New artists

Yes, you read right. As a follow-up on a suggestion from one of my readers, I will find 5 new artists and blog about them. Have already looked through lot of “new” bands and artists, and I think I will manage to pick out 5 of them to blog about. The “new” part is that they are new to me (and new to this blog), and I guess some readers will think that I’ve missed out on something, since I’ve only just discovered the bands before, but at least I’ve checked them out now!
The 5 “new” artists I will blog about are the following:

  • Halestorm
  • 12 Stones
  • Red
  • Epica
  • Dream Theater

… in that order, I think. I will see what kind of inspiration that comes to mind when I listen to their songs… At least I think I have decided which songs to write about for these artists, and that’s pretty good, considering I have trouble with deciding pretty much anything.
I hope you will enjoy this, because I think I will! Happy reading!

“Now that I know the way you play, I don’t want to”
(Forever You – Evanescence)
